SOCIAL SKILLS

It is common for children on the autism spectrum to have a hard time using and understanding social skills. Most neurotypical individuals naturally pick up on social cues, but these often need to be explicitly taught to individuals with autism. Social skills include the most basic social rules such as politeness and general expectations for behavior at home, school, and other public locations. Other examples of social skills are the concepts of joint attention, greetings, and emotions. Such skills can inevitably have a huge impact on one’s life as they are required for friendships, classroom participation, employment, and more.
Here at Positive Reinforcement, social skills assessments are one of many assessments our professionals are able to administer in order to help pinpoint a child’s strengths and areas for growth. Therapists then work with an intervention team to select the most effective social skills interventions, choosing strategies that fit best with the needs of the child.

Applied Behavior Analysis strategies often used to build social skills include:
● Modeling
● Social stories
● Role-play
● Behavioral scripts
● Researched-based curriculum developed specifically for social skills
